Ice Nine Kills' 'Play Dead': Trapped in the Entity's Trial
Ice Nine Kills built a career on splicing horror properties into theatrical metalcore, and "Play Dead" continues that project by borrowing wholesale from the vocabulary of Behaviour Interactive's asymmetric horror game Dead by Daylight. The song's title, its refrain, its imagery of trials, gates, generators, hooks, fog, and an all-consuming "entity" are drawn straight from the game's lore. Read as a standalone lyric, though, it becomes something more portable: a song about being caught in a system designed to feed on you no matter which move you make.
The opening lines set the tone as a taunt from the hunter's side of the map. The narrator asks whether the listener can feel the darkness "feeding on the heartless" and the silence slipping, then delivers the verdict: "You'll be dead by daylight." That phrase does double duty. It names the source material and it condenses the song's fatalism, that whatever you try tonight, morning will find you gone.
The first verse maps the geography of the trap. The narrator describes being suspended in time in the bowels of hell, where an entity dwells and its power swells until it devours the mind. The parenthetical asides ("in the depths of a nightmare," "there's no going back") work like a Greek chorus, closing off exits as the verse opens them. The pre-chorus then flips to the survivors' perspective with a plea to "power up the gates," the in-game objective that means escape, alongside the line "We bleed for all we generate." It is a neat pun on the game's generators and on a broader idea, that whatever the trapped produce only powers the machinery that consumes them.
The chorus tightens the noose. "A trial is upon us" borrows the game's word for a match, but a trial is also a judgment, and the song leans into that ambiguity. "You can flee, you can fight" acknowledges the two survivor archetypes and dismisses both in the same breath.
Verse two is where the writing sharpens. "A depraved ritual and a swift sacrifice / Gives the entity fuel" describes the hook mechanic in game terms and a cult liturgy in human ones. "The loop is the rule, sharp as a hook through the spine" puns on the game's chase loops while making the loop feel like a metaphysical sentence. The title arrives as a tactical instruction, "so play dead or move forward," one of the actual choices a downed survivor faces, and also a broader shrug at how to endure a rigged game.
The bridge is the song's most interesting move. After verses spent describing the trap, it pivots to a toast: "here's to wrongs we cannot right / Here's to scars we cannot hide / Here's to every chance we take to kill or to survive." This is where the horror franchise scaffolding drops away and something more human peeks through. The song stops narrating the nightmare and starts saluting the people stuck inside it, acknowledging that some damage does not heal and some choices are only between two kinds of violence. The closing image, that "the fog is always right behind," universalizes the game's iconic entity fog into a stand-in for whatever it is that keeps catching up.
Context and appeal
Ice Nine Kills has spent multiple albums, notably the Silver Scream records, writing songs from inside specific horror films. A Dead by Daylight tie-in is a logical extension into games, and the band's theatrical, chant-heavy metalcore suits a property built on ritual and repetition. For players, the song functions as fan service dense with references. For non-players, it still works as a straightforward song about a hunt with no exit, which is a durable metalcore mode going back through Killswitch Engage and further.
Whether "Play Dead" endures beyond the marketing cycle it was written for will depend on how tightly listeners bind it to the game. The bridge suggests the band knew that risk and wrote a way out of it, giving the song a second life as a general purpose anthem for people who feel hunted by something they cannot name.

"Play Dead"
Can you feel the darkness feeding on the heartless?
Can you feel the silence slipping away? (Slipping away)
Can you feel the darkness? A trial is upon us
Can you feel the silence slipping away?
You'll be dead by daylight
Dead
By
Dead by daylight
Through the bowels of hell
We're suspended in time
Where the entity dwells (in the depths of a nightmare)
Its power will swell 'til it devours the mind
It's an endless erosion (and there's no going back)
So please (please)
Power up the gates (feel the beat, feel the beat in me)
We bleed (bleed)
For all we generate
Can you feel the darkness feeding on the heartless?
Can you feel the silence slipping away? (Slipping away)
Can you feel the darkness? A trial is upon us
There is no escape, escape
You can flee, you can fight
You'll be dead by daylight
Dead

Dead by daylight
A depraved ritual and a swift sacrifice
Gives the entity fuel (in the depths of a nightmare)
The loop is the rule, sharp as a hook through the spine
So play dead or move forward ('cause there's no going back)
Pierced by our fears
We bow to the entity
So please (please)
Power up the gates (feel the beat, feel the beat in me)
We bleed (bleed)
For all we generate
Can you feel the darkness feeding on the heartless?
Can you feel the silence slipping away? (Slipping away)
Can you feel the darkness? A trial is upon us
There is no escape, escape
You can flee, you can fight
You'll be dead by daylight
Stab in the dark, or you'll be running for your life
You'll feed a force bent on twisting every knife
So take your pick and enjoy your slay tonight
It is the end
Dead (by)
Dead (light)
You can flee, you can fight, but you won't survive the night
Can you feel the darkness feeding on the heartless?
Can you feel the silence slipping away? (Slipping away)
Can you feel the darkness? A trial is upon us
There is no escape, escape (there is no escape)
So here's to wrongs we cannot right
Here's to scars we cannot hide
Here's to every chance we take to kill or to survive (there is no escape)
So here's to wrongs we cannot right
Here's to scars we cannot hide
Here's to every chance we take to kill or to survive (there is no end in sight)
'Cause the fog is always right behind
You can flee, you can fight
You'll be dead by daylight
