Lip-Sync: Two VTubers Perform the Cruelty They Don't Mean
"Lip-Sync" is a duet between two Hololive VTubers performing the exhaustion of having to perform. The title is the thesis: the mouth is moving, the words are nasty, but what you are hearing is not necessarily what the singer feels. The gap between the lip and the honest voice behind it is the whole song.
Released in December 2022 as a one-off single pairing third-generation Shion with sixth-generation La+, the track lands in the lineage of brash, meme-literate J-pop built for streaming culture: quick tempo, English catchphrases jammed into Japanese syntax, a chorus that practically dares you to clip it. The opening image sets the frame. The singer is dizzy, half-drunk, going live: survival mode, on air. Her true feelings have been tidied into cute braids and sent out to do a goal dance. From the first lines, the song flags that what follows is a show.
The put-down as choreography
Most of the lyric is a stream of dismissals aimed at some unlucky second party. He is told to back off, to tuck his tail and die (comically, not literally), to stop lying his way up imaginary staircases. The singers accuse him of being boring, predictable, too clingy, too heavy with his affection. They laugh at him for flinching: are you scared? ahaha. The repeated "ahaha" is the hinge of the whole track; it is not a laugh of amusement but a vocal tic, the sound a performer makes to fill the space where sincerity would go.
The hook keeps circling the same complaint: it is exhausting, why is this happening, so what do you want me to do about it. "Shindoi" (tiring, draining) is the one unguarded word that keeps leaking out between the taunts. The singer paints on a lipstick smeared with ill will and warns the listener not to smudge it, which is as close as the song gets to admitting the cruelty is cosmetic.
The crack in the mask
For two and a half minutes the posture is airtight: patience is at its limit, genius should shut up, your feelings are unreadable and dull, you are already finished. Then, in the final verse, the voice drops the bit. If a wish could come true, she wants to love him. Her mouth is foul but the truth is different. It is a tiny confession, and the song immediately slams the door on it by returning to the exhausted hook, as if the admission itself was too much and had to be covered with another ahaha.
That structural trick, letting the real feeling appear only once and only at the end, is what rescues the song from being a straight novelty diss track. The whole production is designed so you hear the sincerity precisely because it has been withheld.
Why it works for its audience
VTuber music often operates on two levels at once: the in-character performance for the stream, and a wink to the viewer who knows the person inside the avatar is a human doing a job. "Lip-Sync" collapses those levels into subject matter. The character is loudly, aggressively a character; the song keeps pointing at the costume. Fans of Shion, whose streaming persona has long traded on prickliness and sudden softness, and of La+, pitched as a bratty would-be overlord, hear the pairing as perfectly cast. Each half of the duet gets to be meaner than she would be alone, which paradoxically makes the final sincere line hit harder.
The track endures within its scene because it is honest about dishonesty. Anyone who has watched a streamer, or run social media accounts, or simply held a grudge they did not mean, recognises the move: say the sharpest thing you can think of, laugh, repeat, and hope the person on the other end can tell you are lip-syncing.
