T-ara's 'Day by Day,' released on July 3, 2012 as the title track of the EP of the same name, is a power ballad about the long aftermath of a breakup, the kind where the other person has clearly left but the speaker keeps living inside the relationship anyway. The English phrase that gives the song its title is not a celebration of recovery; it is closer to a sentence being served, one day at a time.
The opening lines set up an unusual self-image. The narrator describes her arms as a shelter for the one she loves, while she herself has been discarded by others. Love is then likened to a black tunnel whose end she cannot see, and the path forward frightens her. Before the song has even reached its hook, it has established the central asymmetry: she is the safe place for someone who is not staying.
The pre-chorus pushes the imagery into heat and thirst. A red desert under a beating sun, a person crying from thirst, a plea to be kissed before the night ends. The second verse mirrors the first but turns inward. Now it is not the lover's scent but his voice that returns, and the many nights when they promised forever have become more tears. The rap break and the turn
The rapped section sharpens the tone. The speaker tells him to leave her behind and disappear down the road, and describes the end of a 'crazy love' as a dangerous cliff edge. She says she has been infected by a stubborn love and has kept trembling from it. The language of contagion and addiction is harsher than the ballad sections that surround it, and it functions as a brief admission that this attachment is not healthy, even as the choruses keep pleading for one more kiss.
What follows is the song's only real movement toward release. In the final chorus the line shifts from asking him to whisper that he loves her to a quieter resolution: it is sad, but she will erase him. The repetition of 'day by day' now points in a different direction. The same phrase that described enduring his absence becomes the unit by which she will, slowly, get out from under it.
Why it works
'Day by Day' arrived during one of the most commercially dominant stretches of T-ara's career, when the group was known for high-concept singles and dramatic music videos.
